Disaster Preparedness (2007-2008)

The project communities were 15,000 populations in 16 villages of Niali Block of Cuttack district. The objective was to strengthen community level coping mechanism by developing and strengthening their resource base; enhance the sources of income of the vulnerable people to strengthen livelihood security. The strategies adopted were Development of community level disaster contingency plans, formation of Task forces of Volunteers on Search and Rescue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Water and Sanitation, First Aid trained to respond to emergency situation. Construction of safe shelter places, alternative Income generation support, establishment of Grain/Seed banks to ensure alternative livelihood security. Community level coping mechanism strengthened through availability of safe shelter place (mounds), raised homesteads.450 vulnerable families have alternative livelihood sources to meet disaster situation.

Insurance has been promoted in 25 villages as a risk reduction measure against disaster. Trained volunteers created in each village to generate awareness among people.


Disaster Preparedness (2008-2009)

After the Super Cyclone of 1999 and successive incidence of flood in Orissa, the organization took up disaster management as a major challenge. In this regard community based disaster management model has been implemented in 16 villages of Cuttack district to strengthen community level coping mechanism. Community contingency plans have been developed by village people and task forces of community volunteers on Search and Rescue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Water and Sanitation, First Aid are trained in 16 villages to respond to emergency situation. One mound for Safe shelter constructed with labor contribution by community people. Income generation support provided to 114 families, 4 Grain/Seed banks created to ensure alternative livelihood security. 69 community self help groups among women formed and strengthened.

Insurance promotion: Insurance has been promoted in 25 villages as a risk reduction measure against disaster. 32 Trained volunteers created in each village to generate awareness among people.250 people have been covered under Janata Personal Accident Policy and Rajarajeswery Mahila Bima Kalyan Jojana of National Insurance Company.
